Team Effy WOD 2015

Team Effy WOD 2014

On July 30, 2013,  just 4 weeks after her 2nd birthday, our daughter Effy was diagnosed with leukemia. We went to the doctor for an unrelated bump on her side and after some blood tests, we were told that she had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

It has been a long, tough battle for her to fight Leukemia. She has been poked and prodded over the last three years, enduring surgeries, IV’s, weekly blood draws through her port, ambulance rides, ER visits, blood transfusions, and too many doctors visits to count.  Through it all, she has been so brave and has never once complained about all that she has had to go through.

For three years, she was on strong doses of chemotherapy along with several other medications that she had to take daily. We were travelling 150 miles round trip to Stanford multiple times a month and sometimes multiple times a week. In October 2015, Effy took her last dose of chemotherapy and we were told that she had no visible signs of cancer. For the next five years, we will continue our monthly visits to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital for blood draws and monitoring, making sure that Effy’s cancer doesn’t return.

We started the Team Effy Facebook page soon after Effy’s diagnosis to keep people updated on our journey. Our Facebook page has turned into a real support system and family for us here in California, which is so nice, because our closest family is 3,000 miles away.  In the beginning of this journey, our family needed a lot of financial support and we realized many of the 250 families fighting pediatric cancer in our area also need help. The local CrossFit community jumped at the chance to help us organize this fundraiser for Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services

One of the most important resources in the local area is Jacob’s Heart. Jacob’s Heart is an amazing local organization, who has served over 550 families in Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Clara counties. They provide services which include social and emotional support, art programs for children, financial assistance, transportation help, meal and grocery delivery, and so much more. While money for research is wonderful in the big picture, it’s help at the local level that families rely on when dealing with the devastating news that your child has cancer.

In this 3rd annual Team Effy Workout for Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services, Westridge CrossFit, The Ranch, and Team Effy have once again teamed up to bring you a fun workout for a great cause. All profits go directly to Jacob’s Heart who help children who are fighting cancer. In the first two years, we have raised over $6,000 and hoping this year to pass the $10,000 mark.
